Indiana Jones at Cannes

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opened at Cannes recently to mostly positive reviews. The closely guarded film opens on May 22nd, and it's probably the most hotly anticipated movie of the year. Star Harrison Ford reprises his role as the intrepid archaeologist Indiana Jones, along with Shia LeBeouf, Cate Blanchett and Karen Allen provide the star power for the fourth movie in the classic adventure movie series.

Most of the major movers and shakers that made the first films such a success returned to reprise their roles in the new movie, including director Stephen Spielberg and noted composer John Williams of Star Wars fame. While the Nazis were the main villains in the previous three films, the timeline of the series has moved up to the 1950s, and Jones faces off against a KGB agent (Blanchett) and her lackies to discover a hidden treasure deep in the Amazon rain forest.

Part of the appeal of the new film is that most of the special effects were made using old fashioned movie tricks such as scale models and matte backgrounds, albeit with minor computer generated touch-ups. Spielberg and George Lucas wanted to maintain the look and feel of the old films in the new effort, a point of departure for the historically computer graphics enamored Lucas. While some critics were originally wary of Ford's age and his ability to fill Indy's fedora, the reviews have been for the most part glowing, with a 71% aggregated rating up on Rotten Tomatoes currently.
